Socratic Symposium - Stem Cell Research
Stem Cell Research. Question: There is a moral dilemma in this country about the use of embryonic stem cells for research purposes. Proponents declare that the research could lead to cures for many of today's diseases. Opponents believe that the destruction of human embryos is wrong. Read the articles on the assignments page and come to class prepared to intelligently talk about it.

I think that hundreds of dieases cured would be great but killing human embryo is wrong but 1 life for saving alot more lives... Maybe???

Two points
1. Use adult stem cells
2. The federal debate is constantly drifting towards the morality issue (it is wrong, btw) but it should remain about the funding issue. When ever the government gets involved in the free market system it messes things up. Look at our public education system as an example.
I think we should research stem cells on people that are pregnant, but maybe don't want to have a baby. It would be worth it if it saved peoples lives.

I think we should use stem cell research. But maybe we should use people who want their babies aborted. I know lots of people abortion is wrong, but think about this. If someone is raped, and they are still in school, that would completely ruin their lives. You couldnt get a good job, and you would have a baby you dont even want. Abortion is an option, but why not get rid of the baby by giving its embryo to a good cause.
\louis
Also the embryo is unable to feel pain and is not even classified ashuman yet.
I think we should keep going with stem cell research. The embryos can no longer become a child when the research is done, so they're not taking lives. This could definatly cure a lot of diseases. True, that many woman might get pregnant, have an abortion to get paid so the stem cell research can be done, but that goes to show how many more jobs are needed in the U.S. So, the scientists have every right to do Stem Cell Research, because it can save many lives, and the embryos can't develope, so there's no harm done. Besides, if we were to stop having abotion in the first place, and make it illegal, then people would be getting abortions done in an unsanitary enviorment, and more disease would spread. So if someone does want to get an abortion, then, at least the embryo can save lives, even though it never got the chance to live.
Medora
Good point medora. The when they use the embryo it is just a bundle of cells. it cant feel pain, and it cant even be classified as human in that stage. Millions of lives could be saved . What if they find a cure for cancer, or luchemia. I know a four year old with cancer, and i would rather focus on helping the aleready overpopulated world than just letting this oppurtinity pass us.
louis
I think that Louis has a good point about that we should take the cells out of the babies that are going to be aborted. Even though I am strongly against abortion, if the baby is going to be killed anyway, why not let it save someones life?

Elena
I am against stem cell research. Everyone is saying an embryo isnt yet a human, but it is!!!!!! This is the first step towards a baby!!!!!!! If something terrible happened, which isnt always the case at all, and the mbryo dies, then its not a lifeform. But an embryo is a baby in the works. If the embryo was takin out of a woman for research, that is taking a baby that is being made. If you kill it, which does happen if the research doesn't need it, then you are throwing away a life, a life that is being made. In Family and Foods, Mrs.Harder said that an embryo is developing a brain, and if you look closely, it has ahead and body. One stem cell from an embryo isnt gonig to save many lives, most likely one, or maybe just make one life a little longer. So, it's like a life for a life, killing one for another, but the thing is, scientists never tried it before, because they never had a stem cell to try it on, so it may not even work out. At least not until they tried it out many times, wasting many embryos, lives.
Sara
After my brother screaming at me, saying how wrong I was, and us having our own little debate, I see both sides. It's so hard for me to choose. I still disagree about an embryo not being a lifeform, or anything that matters, because just give it some months and you have a BABY!!! But, then again, if you do research about it, it may save hundreds of lives of children and adults, though killing many possible lives to achieve that. Either way is a risk; if you don't research it, you may be losing a chance to POSSIBLY save people with cancer, or you could do it and POSSIBLY save lives, but killing forming babies in the way of doing so. I have to research some more before I make a decision.
Sara
I just watched the news, and they talked about the stem cell debate. I am for it now, because I found out that the embyros are comming for a petri dish. That's where they take eggs, which women have thousands of, and 'artifically' make an embryo. So, they are not taking a life, they are making one from an egg, which we have more than we need to make a baby. I oppose abortion, but this is taking ONE egg, making it an embryo, and possibly saving already developed, alive, children's lives. I just remembered that some women donate their embryos, too though. I'm against donating them, just like abortion, you made that baby, you better keep it, not kil it. So, I guess I'm for the petri dish whne it comes to the stem cell debate, but not women donating their embryos.
Sara
Stem cell research is something I think that the U.S. should keep on exploring and try and help poeple with it to get better. Christopher Reves was a person who was paralyzed from the neck down. Some people say that he was selfish and just wanted to get better and didn't think about anyone else who was paralyzed. But I don't think that is true. He was an actor but then he was a nice person and if you were paralyzed wouldn't you want to get better? Sitting there once being able to walk and now you can't? So this goes for all of those poeple who thought Christopher Revees was selfish, just put yourself in his shoes for a moment.
Christopher Reeves died on Sunday Ocober 10, 2004.

I forgot to say, that only people who don't want a baby would donate their eggs for the research, so instead of not using their eggs to make a baby, and just letting them sit there until, well, YOU KNOW WHAT, then they donate them for a great cause that we have been trying to cure for years.
sara
Well. I am very sure that christopher reves was a good guy . I read part of his book, and feel very sorry for him. I think that stem cells could save lots of lives. think about not being able to move anything except your head. I know he wanted others with conditions like him to get better. I think that life on earth now is more important than life that could be on earth. we are aleready overpopulated. I understand your thougts on the morality issue, and i wish there was another way than preventing embryos from developing, but there isnt. It would be great if we found cures for diseases, and i think one life for the thousands of other lives, go for it. If i sound too liberal, its because i am liberal.
LOUIS
I think that the stem sell thing has no point at all so I am against it. I say this because the only thing you are doing when you take the stem sell from the baby is you are killing one life to save another. If you don't do this, there might be a chance that they both would live.
Elena
If it saves peoples lives I'm up for it. If it will cure dieseses that are life-treatening it's worth a shot. I'm going for stem cell research.
$Brandon$
I agree with louis. If someone wants an abortion why not put it towards a good cause like stem cell research. Eventually stem cells could save people's lives. Anyway it's not like anyones forcing you to get an abortion. It's your baby. If you want it than keep it. If you want an abortion why not put it towards stem cell research.
luke
Yes there are many diseases that need a cure, but killing human embryos is wrong. These are potential people that could grow up and be healthy. Now I do think there should be a little bit of research on it, like if someone has an extremely bad case of their disease. Or we could use the embryo of a person who wants an abortion. That way we can use them and the baby being killed won''t "go to waste".
miki
I believe in this research and dont oppose it for about 1 reason; this research is possibly saving childrens lives. Would you rather want a possible, 2 week old embryo to survive, which you could create many more of, or help save an already alive child who is sufering from cancer, or lukemia?
Sara
Ok. Now that I really get what stem cell research is all about, this is what I really think; If a baby is going to be aborted BECAUSE the mother was raped, it is a great desicion to donate the egg. Other wise, abortion should not be legal for any reason and mothers shouldn't be forced to donate an egg. This way, babies get chances to live and victims of rape aren't forced to give birth to a baby.
Elena
couples who want babies and are un able to, go to fertility clinics where they collect their eggs and sperm and create an embreo in a test tube. Then the eggs are implanted and they see how many take. Then the couples decide how many they want and are able to care for. If the couple would be unable to care for it, it would be a life that wouldn't be worth having. If the cells were donated, instead of making another miserable it would make another life not miserable. What many people think is when the egg is fertilized, it immediatly becomes a baby. That is not true. It starts off as a ring of cells. those cells become many cells such as hair cells skin cell and all the other cells that make up the humen body. These cells can be useed to cure diseases of other cells. For exaple, stem cell skin cells can be used to cure skin disease. One embreo can cure multible diseases. One unwanted embreo can seriously help someone.
Sincerely yours,
michael
Many people who oppose stem cell research are saying as if a woman is being forced to donate an egg, but that's not the case. A woman CHOOSES to donate, it goes to a better cause than letting all 3 thousand eggs go to waste. Also, if a woman donates an egg, then later wants a baby, she has 2,999 eggs left to try to make a baby. I think thats a good shot!
Sara
I think that nit is ok to use embreotic stem cell as long as the people useing it only use embrios from people that want abortions then they get what they want and the testing continues.
ALEX
Sara, I agree with what you say. But the women may feel forced, to donate an egg because they are tight with money. So, in a way, they are being forced, yes it is their choice, but if they're going to make it by in the world, then this is it.
Medora
I think that aborttion is fine, as long as you use it as a last resort. if you get raped, go for abortion. but i dont it should be used as an easy way out . If you really dont want the baby, you could do it. but it isnt an excuse to go into every sleazy motel and.... YOU KNOW WHAT. a wierd thing is, most people who are against abortion are also against birth control. whats up with that? it isnt like birth control hurts anyone. I dunno. But I think if your going to abort your baby, definitly donate the stem cells. I also think abortion should be legal to everyone, because you never know what the case may be. if they make abortion illegal, more women would have to do it in an unsanitary environment, and that could hurt or kill them. And also, concealed weapons and abortin made illegal are definitely a no-no. Then, instead of performing the abortion themselves, they could always kill themselves with their concealed weapons!!!!!! it makes no sense!! Im against con cealed weapons anyway. People think their family is safer. it isnt. Over the year, lots of little kids see the guns, and not knowing what they are, shoot themselves in the head. My mom was a councelor, and after the concealed weapons law was passed, the number of suicides increased. I just dont see an upside to it.
LOUIS
People are saying that abortion is wrong, but hear my point of view. Some people don't choose abstinence. That's not wrong, sure, some people may disagree with it, but that's how the world works. Some people get pregnant and feel they can't take care of a child. Some women get beaten by their boyfriend, or family because of this. If there were more shelters for women who were pregnant, maybe I would be against abortion. But so far, there isn't a safe enviorment for some women to have children. So, abortion is also saving women from getting abused, or being disowned.
Medora
I DON'T GET WHY THEY ARE KILLING A POSSIBLE BABY. I MEAN THEY COULD SAVE SOMEONE WHO MIGHT ONLY HAVE A YAER OR TWO TO LIVE. IT WOULD BE A TOTAL WAIST OF A LIFE.
CAITLIN
tell me more about the difference between using adult or embrionic stemcell.
There is no grainty that stem cell research will work. They may be killing a to be baby and they may not help anyone! Well my opinion is that this is kin of wrong and that we should just use adult stem cells.

agreeing with Medora.

I think that people shouldn't get the stem cells taken out cause that is just like an abortion. It would be as if you were an egg still in your mom and she wanted to take the stem cells out then you wouln't be born and living today. So it would be just the same only it is you and not your mom. Also ask yourself if you could bare to live with a regretting killing your child. Also it might be the only time you could have a child cause if you are like 35 and your stopping point is 36 then like you like only have one chance to have a baby. So like use it cause you might not have another chance.

I that we should set a law where we like set a age so if you are like 7 or 8 you can get help but if you are like 90 I think that thers in no point in give you help if you have like 5 years left but a 7 or 8 year old has A whole life to live

Y E A H ! ! ! ! !
Medora. I'm a little confused by what you are saying. What does money have to do about an egg? Are you saying the egg is already fertilized, and since some women may be broke, they feel presured to donate it because they cant support their child? It was her choice to have sex, and getting pregnant is a consequence and her responsibility. I agree that pressure to donate her egg/embryo will lead to her decision, or effect it, but she is the only person who can make her donate it. There are those cases when a woman gets raped, but again, it's her choice to donate. it's her decision.
Sara
I'm against abortion. It's killing your child in the making with no benefits. With abortion, poof, it's gone. But, with stem cell research, their egg goes to a great cause to help save lives. That way, if a woman gets raped, she isnt forced to practically ruin her life to support a child, she can donate it to stem cell research,so she wont be a mother at such a young age (in many cases) and her embryo goes to help cure diseases. Right now I think abortion is leagal, instead of the debate on stem cell research, so I guess it's the right choice if you get raped when you are still practically a child yourself and get abortion. But, I agree with Luis, you shouldn't just keep on doing IT, knowing you can always get an abortion if you get pregnant.
Sara
When the cells divides into two, then they'll become twice as strong!
Andrew
When the cells divides, they'll become twice as strong!
Andrew
Sara, what I mean is that some women could start getting pregnant on purpose, just to give their embryo to a labortory to get it's stem cells taken out. One of the concerns in stem cell research, is that women will start getting pregnant on purpose, then scientists will pay them for it. Do you get what i'm saying? But don't get me wrong, this hasn't happened yet.
Medora
I don't think a woman would get pregnant on purpose to donate her embryo. That woman would not be on the bright side, becaus eshe coukd just donate her egg and they can make an embryo. If it hasnt happened yet, how would they know? They are ASSUMING, and I think women would take the high road and donate an egg.
Sara
Medora- I understand where you are coming from, but think about this; yes, you are destroying an embryo during stem cell research. BUT, there are 3,000 eggs in ONE woman, meaning 3,000 chances of getting an embryo per person. That's a lot of chances. If one embryo is 'killed' then you have 2,999 left. Thousands of these eggs which can be embryos are wasted anyway once a woman goes into metapause, so why not donate those eggs which all couldn't possibly become a child anyway? Donating one egg that isnt even a child yet, in exchange for an alive, growing child who's suffering from a disease, who's scared and knows she/he will have a short life, or even an idea of when they are going to die to have a possiblity of getting cured, to me, is an outstanding exchange.
Sara
You are against stem cell research, right, Medora?
Sara
Life is full of risks. If you don't take risks you can't learn or find out anything more. Stem cell research is a risk, and it's one that could change many lives, everyone should have a chance to make a come back.
Sara, I am for Stem cell research, but you have to look at all the sides.
Medora
I was watching south park and they showed super man eating a baby for the stemcells.
ernest
What the @#$% is wrong with some of you?! Embryos aren't babies! Embryos actually a ring shaped group of about ten cells that are the materials that make a baby. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T PARTICIPATE IN IT! Don't think just because you think you got a pretty good idea about what's right and what's wrong you can speak for everyone else. If you don't like it it doesn't mean its wrong. YOU CAN'T CONTROL ME!
